FLEX QUEST

Make demand flexibility fun and understandable through play

Problem Statement

As the energy landscape evolves with the rise of renewables, electric vehicles, and smart technologies, the electricity distribution network is becoming more dynamic and complex. Yet, for most customers, the network remains a “black box”—invisible, misunderstood, and underappreciated.

Your Challenge

Create a simple game or interactive experience that teaches how grid flexibility works. Players should understand concepts like peak shifting, load balancing, or flexible assets through gameplay – not lectures. Think: mobile game mechanics, physical card games, or interactive simulations that work for audiences from age 10 to 60.

This could involve

  • Real-time visualisations of local grid activity or constraints
  • Interactive tools that show how customer behaviour impacts the network
  • Gamified experiences that teach users about grid flexibility, outages, or energy flows
  • Personalised insights into how customers can support a more resilient, low-carbon grid
  • Community dashboards that foster local energy awareness and collaboration.

Other Criteria

  • Think beyond current systems
  • Prioritize customer empowerment, education, and engagement.
  • Consider combining with external data sets

Judging Criteria

  • Innovation & Creativity
  • Customer Impact & Accessibility
  • Technical Feasibility
  • Scalability & Integration Potential with DNO Systems
